FBI, CISA Warn of Chinese Cyber Group's Attacks on U.S. Telecoms

U.S. cybersecurity agencies have issued a joint warning regarding a surge in cyberattacks orchestrated by Salt Typhoon, a Chinese state-linked group. The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) are alerting citizens to the threat, which has specifically targeted key U.S. telecommunication networks.

While the attackers gained access to data from several U.S. telecom companies, the content of calls and messages for the general public remained secure. However, the private communications of some government and political figures were compromised. This breach has raised concerns about the security of digital conversations.

To mitigate these risks, the FBI recommends that U.S. citizens use encrypted communication methods and ensure their devices receive regular operating system updates. They also advise enabling multi-factor authentication for email and social media accounts. A particular point of concern is the Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging protocol, which replaces SMS. The FBI highlighted that RCS does not yet offer full end-to-end encryption when messages are sent between Android and iPhone devices, creating security vulnerabilities.

In contrast, applications such as WhatsApp and Signal provide robust encrypted communication. CISA and the FBI urge citizens to prioritize these more secure platforms until RCS implements adequate protection. The cyber threats have prompted political reactions in the U.S., with senators promising action and a Senate Commerce Committee hearing scheduled for December 11 to address the security concerns.
