FC Nordsjælland suffers narrow defeat in Sweden in Conference League qualifier

FC Nordsjælland (FCN) faced a challenging start to their European campaign, suffering a narrow 0-1 defeat against Swedish side Gais in the first leg of their Europa Conference League qualifying round. The match took place at Gamla Ullevi in Gothenburg.

Gais earned a deserved victory, proving to be the superior team for significant portions of the game. FCN found themselves under considerable pressure during the first half, with the Swedish hosts creating numerous promising chances. Goalkeeper Andreas Hansen was forced into several crucial saves to keep his team in the game. The crossbar also came to FCN's rescue on one occasion, denying Oscar Pettersson with a spectacular long-range shot.

Despite the pressure, the first half appeared headed for a goalless draw until Matteo de Brienne scored in the 42nd minute. The Canadian struck a perfect shot from outside the penalty area, leaving Hansen with no chance. FCN had started to find their footing in the match by that point, and Norwegian player Runar Norheim managed to create a couple of minor opportunities.

The Swedish victory was entirely deserved, as the home team was better for large parts of the match.

The second half was more evenly contested, but Gais remained closer to extending their lead to 2-0 than FCN was to finding an equalizer. Young Icelandic player Robert Thorkelsson had chances to increase Gais's advantage. In the other goalmouth, Prince Amoako came close to equalizing with a long shot that narrowly missed the post shortly before the end of the match.

FCN managed to escape with a manageable deficit, leaving them with a reasonable chance to progress in the tie. The return leg is scheduled for next Thursday in Farum. To reach the Conference League group stage, FCN must navigate two further qualifying rounds after this tie.
