FCT police arrest officers over alleged N40,000 extortion

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has taken officers into custody who are accused of extorting a businessman of N40,000. The alleged incident occurred along the Wuye–Utako Road near Salem Church in Abuja.

The officers depicted in the video have been identified and are currently in custody as the investigation continues.

A viral video showed the businessman recounting how the officers stopped his vehicle and accused him of covering his license plate, an allegation he denied. He stated that the officers initially demanded a N50,000 bribe, which he managed to negotiate down to N40,000.

Upon being alerted to the video, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, ordered an investigation. The FCT police command confirmed that the officers depicted in the video have been identified and are currently in custody as the investigation proceeds. They have appealed to the businessman to visit the FCT Police Command Headquarters to provide a formal statement, which they say will aid in taking appropriate disciplinary action.

The command said it would not tolerate extortion, abuse of authority, misconduct or any form of unprofessional conduct by its personnel.

The command emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards extortion, abuse of authority, misconduct, and any unprofessional behavior by its personnel. They assured the public that any officer found guilty after a thorough investigation would face disciplinary and legal action in accordance with established laws and regulations. The FCT police urged residents to report instances of police misconduct and provide information to assist ongoing investigations, reaffirming their commitment to accountability and respect for citizens' rights.
