FDA Approves Updated COVID-19 Vaccines Targeting Dominant XFG Variant

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved updated COVID-19 vaccines, paving the way for manufacturers to begin distributing doses across the country. The approvals cover vaccines from Moderna, Novavax-Sanofi, and Pfizer-BioNTech, following a recommendation from an advisory panel to target the dominant XFG variant.

Manufacturers had previously indicated their readiness to produce the updated shots in time for the 2026-27 immunization season. The vaccines are approved for individuals aged 65 and older, as well as younger individuals with underlying health conditions that increase their risk of severe outcomes from a COVID-19 infection. Specific age approvals for younger individuals vary by manufacturer, with Moderna's shot approved for children over six months, Pfizer-BioNTech's for those aged five and older, and Novavax-Sanofi's for individuals 12 and up.

However, the rollout faces potential confusion regarding insurance coverage. Last fall, the Trump administration shifted away from universal COVID vaccine recommendations, leading to uncertainty about eligibility. While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends immunizations based on individual decision-making, it remains unclear if the administration will issue updated recommendations for the upcoming season.

This uncertainty is compounded by the fact that the CDC's vaccine advisory panel has been in limbo since a March ruling affected the appointment of its advisors. Insurers typically cover vaccines recommended by this panel, raising questions about coverage in the absence of an official recommendation. Current COVID-19 activity levels are reported as low but have shown a recent increase in testing and wastewater monitoring.
