FDP Urges Faster Action on Drone Defense in Schleswig-Holstein

Schleswig-Holstein's FDP parliamentary group is pressing the state government to expedite measures for drone defense, citing a "dynamic threat situation" that demands a "faster approach." FDP faction leader Christopher Vogt highlighted the increasing threat posed by drones and other forms of hybrid attacks, referencing a recent incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport as evidence of real security risks.

The dynamic threat situation requires a faster approach and the initiation of further concrete measures by the state government.

On August 4, a drone laden with explosives was discovered within the secure zone of the airport, near Ukrainian cargo planes. Federal prosecutors described the event as a "serious attack on transport and logistics infrastructure in Germany." In response, the FDP has submitted a motion calling for the state government to strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure and develop a comprehensive security concept that includes maritime threats.

The threat from drones and other forms of hybrid attacks has recently reached a new quality.

The FDP also demands the full operational readiness of the state criminal police office's drone defense unit and its technical modernization to counter evolving threats. Vogt emphasized the critical role of time in responding to such dangers and called for better equipment for security authorities, clearly defined responsibilities, and appropriate powers.

Drones must not only be detected faster but also be able to be repelled.

To address jurisdictional issues and enhance cooperation, the FDP proposes a concept to be developed by the first quarter of 2027, involving state and federal police, as well as the Bundeswehr. The party also advocates for the state government to strongly support the creation of a suitable maritime security law at the federal level, including a robust coast guard. Vogt stressed the need for rapid detection and neutralization of drones, including underwater variants, and suggested that critical infrastructure companies should be empowered to implement their own drone defense measures.
