Federal government halts Billy Bishop Airport expansion

Federal authorities have officially grounded plans to expand Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport, a move that quashes the prospect of longer runways and the introduction of jet aircraft.

Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced Friday that Ottawa's sole focus will be on the already approved safety enhancements for the runways. He stated the government will not pursue any expansion plans that encroach on public areas like Little Norway Park or Hanlan’s Point Beach, or that would increase noise, harm the environment, or impede Toronto's housing development.

MacKinnon highlighted that over 87,000 public responses were considered in the decision-making process. He acknowledged the airport's vital role in Canada's air transport network, noting a recent $30 million federal investment in a customs pre-clearance facility. However, he stressed that any future airport discussions must address the concerns voiced by Toronto residents.

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed gratitude to the federal government for listening to the city's concerns. The Toronto Port Authority confirmed it has been informed of Ottawa's focus on the runway safety project and will work to meet the city and region's future needs.
