Female Afghan Christian convert flees Taliban, only to risk deportation in Qatar

Ziba Mastoor, an Afghan woman who converted to Christianity and previously held a government position, has fled the Taliban's pursuit, first from Afghanistan to Pakistan and now to Qatar, where she fears deportation could endanger her life. She arrived in Qatar on a temporary visitor visa after Taliban intelligence operatives allegedly pursued her from Afghanistan into Pakistan.

Mastoor's situation underscores the precariousness faced by Afghan women and religious minorities who fled their country after the Taliban's takeover in August 2021. Both Pakistan and Iran have intensified deportations of Afghans, raising concerns that vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers could be returned to Afghanistan to face renewed persecution. The Taliban has imposed severe restrictions on women, excluding them from public life, education, and employment, and has been accused of using a rigid interpretation of Islam to enforce its rule and persecute religious minorities.

Mastoor claims that Taliban intelligence targeted her due to her faith and attempted to arrest her during a nighttime raid. She also alleged that Taliban authorities issued a sentence of "stoning to death" for her conversion, though The Media Line could not independently verify this claim. She stated that her parents, who are Muslim, opposed her conversion in 2019. Persistent harassment by Taliban operatives eventually compelled her to flee Afghanistan for Pakistan, where she lived in constant fear of forced return.

After receiving a warning that Taliban operatives were searching for her in Pakistan, Mastoor fled again, ultimately arriving in Qatar. Her case illustrates the ongoing dangers for those who have escaped the Taliban regime, as they often find themselves in vulnerable positions in neighboring countries, facing the threat of deportation and further persecution.
