Feng Shui: Bathroom mistakes that can affect a home’s energy

Patricia Traversa, director of the Official Center for Professional Feng Shui, told Clarín that bathrooms often have little ventilation and natural light, while water dominates the space. For that reason, she said, they can become areas with excessively Yin energy.

A bathroom facing the main entrance is considered especially significant. Feng Shui treats the entrance as the “mouth of chi,” where energy enters the home. Traversa says energy may be drawn toward the bathroom, creating a sense of leakage that can symbolically affect vital energy and money. She recommends keeping the door closed and creating another focal point near the entrance, such as a lit foyer.

Another arrangement involves a bathroom above the kitchen. The kitchen represents fire and is associated with nourishment and productivity. In Traversa’s explanation, water can symbolically extinguish that productivity. She recommends placing a round-leaved plant near the appliance to complete the “water-wood-fire” energy cycle.

A bathroom in the center of the home also requires care because that location represents the self, one’s response to life’s circumstances and health, and corresponds to the Earth element. Traversa suggests adding stabilizing objects such as bath salts, gems and decorative candles. She also advises repairing dripping taps, leaking cisterns and pipe leaks. Within Feng Shui symbolism, water is linked to the flow of money, so leaks can represent financial loss.
