Fernando Platas Sees Mexico as Favorite to Win Medals at Mexico Cup

Fernando Platas, president of Aquatics Mexico, expressed optimism about the national team's prospects at the Mexico Cup diving competition. He believes Mexico is well-positioned to secure numerous medals, citing the team's strong performance during the opening day.

Platas emphasized the depth and quality of the Mexican delegation, noting that a combination of seasoned divers and promising young athletes creates a favorable environment for success. "The expectation is that Mexico comes and does what it does best as one of the best teams in the world: win several medals," he stated.

The competition is seen as a crucial stepping stone. It offers senior athletes a chance to test their skills against top rivals and prepare for the upcoming Central American and Caribbean Games. Simultaneously, it provides invaluable experience for younger divers, aiding their development for future youth competitions.

Platas also pointed to recent performances, such as Lía Cueva's third place and Aranza Vázquez's fourth in the three-meter springboard, and the strong showings by Kenny Zamudio, Randal Willars, Kevin Berlín, and Emilio Treviño in the 10-meter platform, as evidence of a successful generational transition in Mexican diving. The focus remains on nurturing this new wave of talent for long-term success, with an eye on the 2028 and 2032 Olympic cycles.
