Ferry fire in Indonesia claims five lives, 41 missing

The number of fatalities from a fire aboard the KMP Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry has climbed to five, officials reported Sunday. The incident occurred in the waters north of Sumenep, on Madura Island, East Java.

Authorities confirmed that 227 passengers were successfully evacuated and are safe. The Indonesian National Search and Rescue Agency stated that the latest figures were updated as of Sunday afternoon. Multiple vessels were involved in the extensive rescue operation.

Ships like the Kapal Meratus Pematang Siantar rescued the largest number of survivors, while other vessels, including TB Hasnur 26 and Meratus Project 3, also played crucial roles in evacuating passengers and recovering victims. The Kapal Icon Daniel reported the recovery of one deceased passenger.

The ferry, which was en route from Surabaya to Makassar, was reportedly carrying around 250 people when the fire broke out Sunday morning. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, and search efforts are continuing for any potential additional victims.
