Fewer shootings recorded in Sri Lanka this year

Sri Lanka has recorded a notable decline in shooting incidents in 2026, with 20 such events occurring up to July 19. These incidents have tragically led to 13 fatalities and left 11 individuals injured, according to police headquarters.

This year's figures show a marked decrease compared to previous periods. The police attribute this positive trend primarily to successful operations targeting organized crime syndicates. Many members of these groups, who had been hiding abroad while orchestrating crimes, have now been apprehended and brought back to the country.

In July alone, five shooting incidents were reported across the Matugama, Katunayake, Navagamuwa, Piliyandala, and Dehiwala police jurisdictions. These incidents resulted in one death and three injuries. The police emphasize that the ongoing efforts to dismantle these criminal networks are crucial to maintaining public safety and further reducing violent crime.
