FG Launches Laptop Credit Scheme to Give Access, Boost to Digital Devices

The Nigerian Federal Government has introduced a new consumer credit scheme, C.L.I.C.K.D (Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices), to enhance access to laptops and internet-enabled devices for Nigerians. Launched in Abuja, the program is a collaboration between the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) and the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.

The initiative's primary goal is to narrow the digital divide by offering structured financing for digital tools, with an initial focus on locally assembled laptops. As the program expands, it will prioritize "made-in-Nigeria" devices, aiming to stimulate local manufacturing and create employment opportunities.

C.L.I.C.K.D is being rolled out concurrently with the government's Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program. This synergy seeks to equip eligible Nigerians, particularly young individuals, with the necessary devices to acquire technical skills, engage in remote work, and participate fully in the digital economy.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, emphasized that affordable credit is essential for achieving the nation's goal of a $1 trillion economy, aligning with President Bola Tinubu's vision. He stated that the program would foster entrepreneurship, job creation, and economic growth by enabling citizens to acquire productive assets.

Uzoma Nwagba, Managing Director of CREDICORP, announced that 1,000 locally assembled laptops would be distributed to qualified 3MTT fellows nationwide, starting with 177 beneficiaries in Abuja. This rollout is part of a larger strategy to broaden access to affordable technology, empowering more Nigerians to succeed in the digital landscape. The government hopes this scheme will boost skills, productivity, and digital inclusion.
