FG moves to boost innovation hubs for jobs, entrepreneurship

Nigeria's Federal Government is prioritizing the strengthening of innovation hubs across the country to bolster entrepreneurship and create jobs. The initiative seeks to extend the benefits of the digital economy beyond major technology centers.

Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, stressed the necessity of increased investment in technology hubs and innovation spaces. He highlighted that these environments are vital for providing young entrepreneurs with the skills, networks, mentorship, and infrastructure needed to build successful businesses. "Imagine if we had all the hubs in Nigeria at the same level of quality as the best hubs in the country. There would be more technology businesses, more innovation and better opportunities across the country," Tijani stated.

The government's strategy involves enhancing local innovation ecosystems to encourage the development of solutions for domestic challenges, thereby creating employment and supporting economic diversification. The success of prominent Nigerian tech companies serves as a testament to the nation's innovation potential, but the minister pointed out that greater attention is required for the foundational hubs that nurture entrepreneurial ideas.

This push for stronger innovation hubs is occurring as innovation activities remain concentrated in Lagos, Abuja, and a few other states. This geographic concentration leaves many communities without access to the support networks available in the primary technology centers. The Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa, noted that while over 339 innovation hubs exist, a significant number are clustered in a few key areas. The government's investment in digital infrastructure, including fiber-optic connectivity and satellite technology, will have limited impact if innovation hubs lack the resources to attract and retain skilled talent.
