Fields Medal Awarded to Four Young Mathematicians, Including Two Chinese Scholars

The Fields Medal, widely regarded as the "Nobel Prize of mathematics," has honored four exceptional mathematicians under the age of 40. This prestigious award, presented every four years, celebrates outstanding discoveries in the field.

This year's recipients include two Chinese mathematicians, Hong Wang and Yu Deng. Hong Wang, 35, who teaches in France and the United States, becomes the third woman to win the Fields Medal since its establishment in 1936. Her work has notably led to the resolution of a mathematical puzzle that had remained unsolved for over a century. The problem, posed by Japanese mathematician Soichi Kakeya, concerned the smallest area required to rotate a line segment, a seemingly simple question with profound implications that had stumped many researchers.

Yu Deng, who teaches at the University of Chicago, also received the award, underscoring China's increasing prominence in mathematics over recent decades. The United States, holder of the record for the most Fields Medal laureates, also saw one of its own recognized: 37-year-old John Pardon.

The Fields Medal consists of a gold medallion featuring Archimedes and a prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars. The ceremony took place in Philadelphia.
