Fiery, Melodic, and With a Tank on Stage: Sabaton Closes Graspop Metal Meeting 2024

Swedish power metal titans Sabaton delivered a powerful and melodic closing performance at the Graspop Metal Meeting 2024, captivating a large audience with their signature blend of war-themed lyrics, pyrotechnics, and impressive stage presence. The band, led by Joakim Brodén and Pär Sundström, has a strong following in Belgium, marking their ninth appearance at the Dessel festival.

Sabaton's setlist featured a potent mix of anthemic choruses and driving rhythms, with many fans singing along to lyrics that occasionally appeared on screen. The visual spectacle included extensive fireworks and fire effects, enhancing the dramatic presentation. A notable prop was a giant tank, serving as a stage for the drummer, which was moved across the main stage midway through the performance.

Guitarist and co-founder Pär Sundström expressed deep emotion during an extended thank you to the festival and its attendees. He recalled the band's humble beginnings at Graspop in 2007, starting in a smaller tent and gradually climbing the festival's lineup. "We are extremely honored to close this festival, one of the best festivals in the world," he stated, reflecting on the band's journey and the memories created.

The performance included crowd favorites like 'Stormtroopers' and a particularly moving rendition of 'Christmas Truce,' a song about the 1914 World War I ceasefire. The audience's response, illuminated by thousands of smartphone lights, created a sea of lights during the performance. The festival concluded with 'To Hell and Back' and a final barrage of fireworks, marking the end of Graspop 2024 on a dry note, a first for the event.
