FIFA Adopts U.S. Tradition: Championship Rings for World Cup 2026 Winner

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature a new tradition: the awarding of championship rings to the victorious team, mirroring a practice deeply ingrained in American professional sports.

FIFA announced it will produce 2,026 rings, with 30 designated for the winner of the final match. An additional 1,996 rings will be offered to the public as officially licensed merchandise. This move integrates one of the most established customs from U.S. sports into the world's biggest soccer tournament.

The rings will bear commemorative inscriptions of the event and the name of each winner. They will feature blue stones forming a circle on the top, bordered by engravings of the Cup's name, the FIFA acronym, and white stones creating a path around the ring. Major American sports leagues like the NFL, NHL, MLB, and NBA regularly present such rings to their champions.

This introduction of championship rings is not the only American custom being incorporated into the 2026 World Cup. The tournament will also adopt the division of games into four quarters, complete with hydration breaks, and will feature a 30-minute musical performance during the final match's halftime.

FIFA stated that the design will include the FIFA World Cup trophy on one face, while the other side will be personalized to reflect the winning team's identity. Each ring will be individually numbered and custom-made, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. Following the final game at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the captain and coach of the winning team will receive provisional rings, after which the 30 personalized rings will be manufactured and sent to them.
