FIFA Executives Distance Themselves as Infantino's World Cup Plan Faces Mutiny

FIFA President Gianni Infantino's administration is reeling from a public relations crisis after he withdrew a contentious proposal to sell a stake in the World Cup for $4.2 billion. The plan, which would have introduced private investment into the tournament for the first time, sparked an "unprecedented civil war" within football's governing body, leading influential executives to publicly distance themselves from the project.

FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom acknowledged the "sad and reproachable series of events" that led to the proposal's permanent abandonment. Adding to the internal dissent, FIFA's senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro resigned with immediate effect, labeling the plan a "bad deal for football." Kevin Lamour, FIFA's Chief Operating Officer, reportedly described the proposal as a "project of one person" and stated that staff felt "deceived." Arsene Wenger, FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development, clarified that he was not involved in the proposal and only learned about it through media reports. He supported the withdrawal, stating, "The decision to withdraw the project was absolutely necessary and beyond question, because I firmly believe in an independent FIFA that serves our game with commitment, transparency, and integrity."

Reports suggest that three regional confederations united to challenge Infantino's leadership, while UEFA confirmed it sent a legal request to FIFA regarding the matter.
