FIFA Opens Case Against Paredes, Molina, Almada, Ayala, and Gavi for World Cup Final Incidents

FIFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against four Argentine individuals and one Spanish player concerning violent incidents that occurred after the World Cup final on July 19. The final saw Spain defeat Argentina 1-0 in East Rutherford, United States.

Among the Argentines facing charges are players Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina, and Thiago Almada. Paredes is particularly implicated, facing three charges based on the prosecutor's report. Roberto Ayala, part of the coaching staff under Lionel Scaloni, is also subject to an investigation.

From the Spanish side, midfielder Gavi is the sole player under investigation. The proceedings against him will assess potential sanctions for aggressive and unsportsmanlike conduct, referencing relevant articles within FIFA's Disciplinary Code.

FIFA stated that the accused have been given the opportunity to present their case, and the Disciplinary Committee will issue a resolution at a later date. Tensions flared on the field immediately after the final whistle as the Spanish team began celebrating their second World Cup title.

Argentina's Football Association (AFA) may also face sanctions for potential violations, including using the sporting event for non-sporting manifestations or issues related to match order and security, such as displaying inappropriate messages. FIFA had previously announced an investigation on July 16 following the display of a banner by several Argentine players claiming sovereignty over the Falkland Islands after their semifinal victory against England.
