FIFA powerless as USA denies World Cup participants entry, sparking 'racism' claims

The upcoming FIFA World Cup in the USA is already facing controversy as several participants have been denied entry into the country, leading to accusations of racism and questioning the nation's suitability as a host.

Most notably, a highly regarded referee from Somalia, Omar Artan, was prevented from officiating in the tournament. After an 11-hour questioning process in Miami, despite holding a valid visa, he was put on a flight back to Istanbul. Artan expressed deep disappointment, stating, "I am just a referee trying to live my dream – the biggest dream of my life, to come to the World Cup. This is racism, simply. Shameful."

Other national teams have also experienced significant difficulties. The Senegalese team underwent body searches and baggage inspections outside their plane before entering the terminal in San Antonio. Videos circulating on social media show the Uzbek team being stopped at a security checkpoint before a practice match against the Netherlands. Iraq's forward Aymen Hussein was reportedly questioned for nearly seven hours, while the team's photographer, Talal Salah, was denied entry after a more than ten-hour detention.

FIFA has issued a statement acknowledging the situation but distancing itself from the immigration processes. "FIFA is not involved in the host country's immigration processes, including visa review, and has been informed by the authorities that Artan's status will not be changed at this time," the statement read. Swedish defender Isak Hien commented on the incidents, expressing sympathy for those affected and noting the stark contrast in experiences.
