FIFA President Considers Expanding World Cup to 64 Teams from 2030

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is exploring a significant expansion of the World Cup, potentially increasing the number of participating teams to 64 as early as the 2030 tournament. Infantino stated in an interview with Swiss broadcaster Blue Sport that the possibility of a 64-team format would be "definitely discussed" by relevant committees after the conclusion of the current North American tournament. He emphasized FIFA's goal to make the World Cup a truly global event, accessible to all nations. "The World Cup should be for the whole world, not just for Europe and South America," Infantino remarked, adding that "every country should have the dream of participating in the World Cup." He argued that smaller nations lose motivation for development if they are denied opportunities to compete on the world stage. This discussion follows the 2026 World Cup, which will already see an unprecedented 48 teams competing. Infantino pointed to the current tournament's success, noting that nine out of ten African teams reached the knockout stage, as evidence of the importance of inclusivity. The idea was initially proposed by the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) last year for the 2030 centenary celebration, though it faced initial opposition from European, Asian, and North American confederations. Expanding to 64 teams would double the number of matches compared to the 32-team format, resulting in a total of 128 games.
