FIFA President Infantino receives CONMEBOL support in Colombia

FIFA President Gianni Infantino secured a significant endorsement from CONMEBOL during his visit to Cali, Colombia. The Confederation of South American Football expressed its firm support for Infantino amidst ongoing discussions about the future of football governance and his controversial proposals.

Infantino attended the inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella, who assumed the presidency of Colombia for the 2026-2030 term. During the event, CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez reiterated the confederation's backing for Infantino, particularly in light of the FIFA chief's proposal to privatize the World Cup. This proposal had previously met with resistance from UEFA and other football bodies.

Domínguez praised Infantino's leadership, stating, "There is a leader for that transformation. The 48-team World Cup has been extremely successful, much more than I expected. And the name is none other than President Infantino."

Despite the controversy surrounding the proposed privatization of FIFA's commercial operations through a subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which was later withdrawn, several football organizations, including CONMEBOL, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Argentine Football Association (AFA), and the Mexican Football Federation, have maintained their support for Infantino.

The FIFA presidential elections are slated for March 18, 2027, and Gianni Infantino has so far announced his intention to seek re-election, positioning himself as the sole candidate at this time.
