Fig Harvest Begins in Turkey Amid Lower Yields but High Demand

In the Kozan district of Adana, Turkey, fig farmers have commenced their harvest. Producers in the Kuytucak neighborhood are carefully picking ripe figs from their approximately 5-decare orchards, sorting them into crates for sale in the city center. The harvest is expected to conclude within about 15 days.

Farmer Faruk Yiğenoğlu noted a decrease in this year's fig yield. He attributed this decline to significant fig drop experienced in June. Despite the lower production, Yiğenoğlu highlighted a strong demand for the fruit, particularly from those preparing winter pestil (a fruit leather) and dried figs.

"Our yield has decreased a bit this year," Yiğenoğlu stated. "We experienced a lot of fig drop in June. Now our harvest has started. We have about a 15-day harvest period. Demand is high, especially from citizens who want to make winter pestil and dried figs." The harvested figs are transported from the village to the city center to reach consumers.

The current harvest season aims to meet the demand for figs used in traditional preparations, showcasing the fruit's importance in local culinary practices despite the challenges posed by weather conditions earlier in the season.
