Filipina star Eala stuns Osaka to reach Washington final

Filipina tennis sensation Alexandra Eala delivered a stunning upset on Saturday, defeating former world number one Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-2 to reach the women's final of the WTA and ATP Washington Open. This victory secures Eala's spot in her second career WTA final, having previously reached one last year at Eastbourne.

The 21-year-old left-hander, currently ranked 28th, has had a remarkable run in Washington. She had already eliminated second seed Elina Svitolina and 2025 Washington champion Leylah Fernandez, marking her sixth top-10 victory of the year. Osaka, ranked 13th, was aiming for her eighth career WTA title and first since the 2021 Australian Open, but was thwarted by Eala's impressive performance.

Eala will now face third-ranked Jessica Pegula in the championship match. Pegula, who is seeking her 12th career WTA title and third of the year, advanced by defeating Russia's Diana Shnaider 7-5, 6-4 in the other semifinal. Pegula has a previous win against Eala in a 2025 Miami semifinal, describing the upcoming final as "going to be a battle" and calling Eala "the future of the tour."

Pegula's semifinal victory was hard-fought. After falling behind 5-2 in the first set, the American top seed mounted a comeback, ultimately winning the set and then securing the match. She has had a strong season, winning titles in Dubai and Charleston, and leads the WTA with 38 match victories this year.
