Filmmaker Đorđe Kadijević remembered for deep understanding of Serbian history

Filmmaker and art historian Đorđe Kadijević, known for his deep engagement with Serbian history, died in Belgrade on July 10 at the age of 93. Actress Gorica Popović, who starred in his renowned series "Vuk Karađić," remembered him as an exceptional intellectual with a profound understanding and love for Serbian history.

He deeply knew our history and loved it. He was an exceptional intellectual, a man you could listen to for hours.

Popović, who portrayed Ljubica Obrenović in Kadijević's works, including the 1987 series "Vuk Karadžić," which was once named the best European series, highlighted his unique perspective on the region's history. "He had a very broad view of everything that happened in this region," she said. "He had fantastic energy, a love for film, for everything he did in art criticism, television, and film."

She also recalled Kadijević's film "Leptirica" as a groundbreaking work in Serbian cinema. Popović last saw Kadijević about 18 months prior at a discussion about television series production, where she was impressed by his continued sharpness and knowledge. "Unfortunately, only memories remain. He was a great figure in our culture, thank you," she said, bidding farewell to the late director.

Kadijević had many unrealized projects, with his ideas often remaining in "drawers." Popović expressed regret that he did not produce more, given his distinctive artistic signature.
