Final Stolperstein Completes Wartime Story of Innkeeper Family

The story of a local innkeeper family, marked by the Nazi era, has reached its poignant conclusion with the placement of the final Stolperstein in Mokré Lazce, Opavsko. The brass memorial stone, laid before the Municipal House, honors Františka Silbersteinová, a member of the family whose wartime experiences were shrouded in mystery, even to her descendants.

The Stolpersteine, or stumbling stones, are a project by German artist Gunter Demnig. They serve as a stark reminder of the victims of Nazism, with each stone inscribed with the name and life dates of a person who was persecuted, murdered, or forced to flee by the Nazi regime. The stones are typically placed in the pavement in front of the last voluntarily chosen residence of the victim.

This final stone in Mokré Lazce closes a chapter for the Silberstein family, bringing a measure of remembrance and recognition to a history that had faded with time. It underscores the importance of such memorials in preserving the memory of those affected by historical atrocities.
