Finance: Saxon Cultural Senate criticizes budget draft as 'fatal signal'

The Saxon Cultural Senate has sharply criticized the government's draft budget for 2027/28, labeling it a "fatal signal" for the region's cultural landscape. The Senate, an advisory body composed of 24 cultural representatives, stated that the proposed funding cuts would undermine the very structures that support art and culture across Saxony, with a particular negative impact on the independent arts scene and rural communities.

"With the planned funding cuts, precisely those structures that carry art and culture throughout the country will be weakened – especially the independent cultural scene and rural areas," the body announced in Dresden. The Senate argues that the scale of the proposed savings is disproportionate to the cultural damage they would inflict. It highlighted that the cuts contradict the repeatedly emphasized importance of culture for social cohesion, democracy, and the attractiveness of rural regions.

Of particular concern are the proposed reductions for the Cultural Foundation of the Free State. The Senate described this as the most important funding instrument for independent art, and stated that a potential cut of up to 50 percent would significantly weaken it. This follows a similar warning issued during the 2025/26 budget deliberations, where the Senate had already cautioned against undermining the foundation's financial capacity. The current draft, however, proposes even deeper cuts than previously warned.

The Cultural Foundation annually supports over 1,000 projects, more than half of which are implemented outside Saxony's major cities. The Senate contends that reducing this support jeopardizes cultural diversity and weakens rural areas. They are calling on the state parliament to revise the budget during the upcoming deliberations and ensure that funding for arts and culture is maintained at least at the level of the previous budget cycle. The Senate warned that the current draft budget risks initiating a "partial death of cultural diversity and makes long-term visions superfluous."
