Fire at Russia-China Joint Venture Gas Plant Kills 7, Including 6 Chinese Citizens

A devastating fire erupted at a natural gas chemical plant in Russia's far eastern Amur region on August 25, claiming the lives of seven people and injuring 152 others. The blaze has since been extinguished.

The Amur Gas Processing Plant, a significant joint venture between Russia's largest gas processing and petrochemical company, Sibur, and Chinese state-owned refining giant Sinopec, was preparing for its official launch when the incident occurred. The facility is designed to produce 2.3 million tons of polyethylene and 400,000 tons of polypropylene annually, positioning it as one of the world's largest producers of these materials.

Tragically, six of the seven fatalities were Chinese citizens employed at the plant. Russia frequently relies on foreign labor, including workers from China, for its large-scale industrial and infrastructure projects. Of the 152 individuals injured, 36 required emergency hospitalization, and nine remain unaccounted for.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has launched an inquiry into the incident, suspecting potential violations of industrial safety regulations. The investigation aims to determine the cause of the fire and ascertain any breaches in safety protocols at the facility.
