Fire breaks out again in Deliblatska Pescara

A fire has broken out again near the Susara road in Deliblatska Pescara, including on a strip of land that had not previously burned. The area is officially classified as already burned, but it remains within the wider zone affected by the fire.

Nedeljko Gagic, head of Serbia’s Fire and Rescue Units Directorate, told N1 that strong wind gusts and underground hotspots caused the flames to breach the containment line. Patrols in off-road vehicles now cover the perimeter, while video surveillance helps crews track the situation.

Firefighters respond whenever they detect a new underground hotspot, hoping to stop it from spreading and becoming a crown fire. Between 100 and 150 such hotspots appear each day, particularly in the afternoon. Officials estimate that they may not be fully extinguished until after several days of rain because new hotspots can emerge in different parts of the affected area.

The Russian Ilyushin firefighting aircraft has returned to the operation after spending two days fighting fires on Suva Planina. Helicopters are not currently being used. Firefighters have fought fires in Deliblatska Pescara since the end of July, and the blaze burned continuously for more than two weeks from August 5. EU countries and Russia have provided assistance, with Moscow sending the Ilyushin aircraft at Serbia’s request.
