Fire breaks out at Gyeongbuk Bonghwa smelter; no casualties reported

A fire erupted at the Seokpo Smelter in Bonghwa County, Gyeongbuk Province, on July 9, prompting an immediate response from emergency services. The Gyeongbuk Fire Department reported the incident occurred around 12:36 PM, and they quickly declared a Level 1 response at 12:42 PM to manage the escalating situation and prevent further spread.

Firefighting operations are currently underway as authorities work to extinguish the blaze. As of the latest reports, there have been no confirmed injuries or fatalities resulting from the fire. The focus remains on containing the flames and ensuring the safety of personnel and the surrounding area.

In response to the potential danger, Bonghwa County issued a disaster alert via text message. Residents in proximity to the smelter were advised to move to safer locations farther from the incident site. Additionally, drivers were instructed to use alternative routes to allow emergency vehicles unobstructed access and to avoid the affected area.
