Fire crews work on containment lines between out-of-control blaze and Kimberley, B.C.

Firefighters in British Columbia are racing against time to establish containment lines between a rapidly growing wildfire and the city of Kimberley. The out-of-control blaze, located approximately 10 kilometers west of the community, has prompted an evacuation alert for all of Kimberley's more than 8,000 residents, urging them to prepare for immediate departure.

The BC Wildfire Service is deploying heavy equipment in an effort to build containment lines and halt the fire's advance. The terrain where the fire is burning is steep, making direct firefighting efforts challenging. The wildfire, detected on Saturday, has already expanded to cover about six square kilometers. This blaze is one of approximately 35 fires currently burning out of control across British Columbia, with about 100 fires active in total as of Monday.

Adding to the concern, another fire in the B.C. Interior has led to an evacuation order for several properties in Downing Provincial Park, including its campground, issued by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District. The wildfire service anticipates that warming and drying conditions will persist, increasing the likelihood of new wildfires igniting. Residents are urged to stay informed and prepared as the situation remains dynamic.
