Fire in Denpasar’s Nakula-Sunset Road destroys more than a dozen vehicles

A fire that tore through a settlement in Denpasar’s Sunset Road and Jalan Nakula area destroyed 11 motorcycles and two minivans, along with semi-permanent homes and household belongings.

The blaze struck the Gang Jatayu settlement in Pemecutan Kelod, West Denpasar, on Monday night. Authorities said the affected area covered about three hectares. Scrap materials and other easily combustible items helped the flames spread through the settlement.

Firefighters contained a new flare-up on Tuesday afternoon, but strong winds caused the fire to grow again and spread to surrounding areas. Two semi-permanent homes owned by a resident identified as Niman also caught fire later that day after initially escaping damage.

Fire crews from Denpasar and neighboring Badung continued working at the scene overnight, using two excavators to clear debris. At 12:50 a.m., firefighters were still extinguishing flames in the remaining ruins. The site remained too hot for Bali’s police forensic laboratory to conduct a full examination, which officials said could take place in two or three days.

Police have cordoned off the suspected origin point. Denpasar police chief Leonardo David Simatupang said investigators believe a leaking gas cylinder in one of the settlement’s structures may have started the fire. Officials said no fatalities had been reported, while the investigation continued.
