Fire Near Birmingham Destroys 19 Buildings; 20 Hospitalized

A significant fire in Stourbridge, West Midlands, near Birmingham, England, has completely destroyed 19 buildings and left approximately 50 people affected by smoke and heat. Twenty individuals required hospitalization, including four firefighters who suffered heatstroke while battling the blaze. The fire ignited on what was recorded as the hottest day of the year and has since spread across 500 acres of woodland, remaining unextinguished.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham, visiting Stourbridge, reported that 37 fires have broken out across the country in the past two days. This surge in fires occurs during one of the driest summers on record for England and Wales. Of the 37 fires, four are classified as severe.

In response to the escalating fire risk, the government has implemented a ban on disposable barbecues. This measure aims to limit the potential for new fires, as these products have been identified as the cause of several incidents throughout the summer and are considered unsafe. The ongoing dry conditions exacerbate the danger, making such preventative actions critical.
