Fire: Widespread power outage after fire in Mechernich

A significant power outage struck the district of Euskirchen in Germany's North Rhine-Westphalia region on Sunday evening, plunging numerous villages into darkness. The disruption, which lasted for over three hours, was attributed to a fire at a transformer in Mechernich.

According to police reports, the outage began around 6:00 PM and affected a wide area, with some locations experiencing temporary traffic light failures as well. The fire, which originated at a transformer near Gehn, was eventually extinguished, and power was gradually restored to the affected communities by approximately 9:40 PM.

While the immediate crisis of the power outage has been resolved with the restoration of electricity, the underlying cause of the transformer fire remains unclear. Investigations into the incident are ongoing to determine how the fire started and to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
