Firefighters avert disaster as petrol tanker crashes at Kwara filling station

A potential disaster was narrowly averted in Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria, on Monday morning when firefighters responded swiftly to a petrol tanker crash at a filling station. The incident occurred around 6:02 a.m. at the YTK Filling Station in the Apata area, opposite the Youth Camp.

The vehicle struck the station’s perimeter fence, causing the tanker compartment containing the PMS to detach from the truck.

The tanker, carrying a significant load of 45,000 liters of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), reportedly lost control as the driver attempted to maneuver the vehicle within the station's premises. The truck veered off course and collided with the station's perimeter fence. The impact caused the tanker compartment filled with petrol to detach from the main truck.

Upon arrival, the Kwara State Fire Service immediately took control of the situation. Spokesman Hassan Adekunle stated that firefighters initiated intensive cooling and dampening operations to eliminate any potential ignition sources. Their prompt actions were crucial in preventing the highly flammable petrol from igniting, despite the dangerous circumstances.

On arrival, firefighters swiftly secured the scene and commenced intensive cooling and dampening operations to eliminate any potential source of ignition and prevent the outbreak of fire.

Following the successful mitigation of fire risk, the spilled fuel was safely siphoned into another empty tanker under the close supervision of the fire service. The operation concluded without any casualties, injuries, or fire-related damage to property. The Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, commended the emergency responders for their professionalism and timely intervention, highlighting that their efforts prevented a catastrophe.

Muhammed also issued a cautionary note to tanker drivers and petroleum marketers, urging strict adherence to safety procedures during the transportation, parking, and handling of petroleum products. He emphasized that vigilance is paramount in preventing avoidable emergencies. Road accidents involving petroleum tankers remain a significant safety concern in Nigeria, frequently leading to devastating fires and loss of life.
