Firefighters battle large forest fire; tanks deployed

Approximately 200 firefighters and emergency personnel fought a significant forest and meadow fire that raged across about ten hectares in Germany's Birkenfeld district. The blaze, which sent plumes of smoke over the affected area between Reichenbach and Kronweiler, was declared "in the essential fire sections" under control by evening, according to the district administration.

In a unique deployment, Bundeswehr (German army) tanks were utilized to create firebreaks by clearing sections of the forest, aiding ground crews. Helicopters provided aerial reconnaissance and assisted in the firefighting operations. The district administration stated that there was no cause for concern for the population in the surrounding villages, and the communities of Reichenbach and Kronweiler, as well as a waste management center, were not in immediate danger.

"The fire was triggered by a technical defect in a rally vehicle," the district administration wrote, adding that the vehicle was driving on the path without authorization.
