Firefighters battle two forest fires in Quito

Quito's emergency services are on high alert as firefighters simultaneously combat two significant forest fires within the city limits. The blazes are active in distinct sectors, requiring a coordinated response from the Quito Fire Department.

One fire is currently being addressed in the La Libertad sector, located in the southern part of Quito. Firefighters are actively working to control the flames in this area. Simultaneously, another forest fire has erupted in the Itulcachi sector, situated on the eastern hillsides of Quito, near the Antisana volcano.

The Quito Fire Department has issued a strong public appeal for prevention, urging residents not to engage in burning trash or dry vegetation. They emphasize that a small flame can quickly escalate into a dangerous forest fire, threatening lives, homes, and natural spaces.

Furthermore, the department reminded the public that intentionally starting a forest fire carries severe penalties. Offenders could face fines surpassing $36,000. The message underscores that responsible decision-making by citizens is the first line of defense against such destructive events.
