First edition of 'Purple Saturday' initiative kicks off on 25 July

Oman is set to launch 'Purple Saturday,' a new initiative aimed at fostering greater community inclusion and empowerment for individuals with disabilities. Scheduled for July 25, the event, themed "A Day with a Lasting Impact," seeks to bolster efforts in social responsibility and encourage institutions across the public and private sectors to cultivate more welcoming and accessible environments.

This initiative, observed annually on the last Saturday of July, is part of a broader GCC effort to raise awareness about the rights of persons with disabilities. It encourages commercial, service, and tourism establishments to offer specialized services and experiences tailored to the needs of people with disabilities, thereby enhancing their integration into society. First launched in 2021, 'Purple Saturday' reflects a unified GCC vision to support and empower individuals with disabilities, improving their quality of life and promoting equal opportunities.

The 'Purple Saturday' initiative directly supports 'Oman Vision 2040,' which emphasizes building an inclusive society where everyone has equal opportunities. By promoting initiatives that improve service quality and develop inclusive environments, Oman aims to uphold values of respect and equality, aligning with sustainable development goals and enhancing overall quality of life.

Adnan Mustafa Al Farsi, Acting Director General of the Directorate General of Communication and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, highlighted the initiative's role in raising public awareness about the importance of inclusive environments. He stressed the need to encourage institutions to adopt accessibility practices and to recognize the private sector's crucial role in achieving sustainable social development. The color purple, globally associated with disability, was chosen to represent respect, dignity, appreciation, and solidarity, embodying the initiative's core message.

Through this initiative, the Ministry of Social Development seeks to raise community awareness of the importance of providing inclusive and friendly environments for persons with disabilities, encourage institutions to adopt practices supporting accessibility, and highlight the role of the private sector as a key partner in achieving sustainable social development, thereby enhancing social responsibility and instilling a culture of inclusiveness across various sectors.
