First Lady Kim Keon-hee feels world closer after learning of Korean learners in Amazon

South Korean First Lady Kim Keon-hee experienced a sense of global closeness during her state visit to Brazil, particularly upon learning that children in the Amazon are learning the Korean language. Kim, accompanying President Yoon Suk Yeol, visited an art exhibition in Brasília alongside Brazil's First Lady Rosângela Lula da Silva.

During their visit to the Federal Court of Accounts Cultural Center, the two First Ladies viewed an exhibition titled 'Festival of Lights: Popular Festivals and Brazilian Art.' Rosângela da Silva explained the inspiration behind the diverse artworks, which draw from Brazil's representative June and July festivals. These festivals, rooted in Catholic saint days and rural harvest traditions, bring communities together for food, song, and dance.

Kim Keon-hee responded to Rosângela da Silva's remarks about growing interest in Korean culture in Brazil, including K-dramas, and the increasing number of people learning Korean. "Hearing that there are children learning Korean even in the Amazon, I truly feel that the world is becoming closer," Kim said. The two leaders concluded their engagement by sharing a traditional Brazilian corn-based dish.

An official briefing stated that both First Ladies agreed on the importance of culture as a bridge between nations and expressed hope for strengthened cooperation between South Korea and Brazil following the state visit. The encounter underscored the cultural diplomacy efforts during the presidential trip.
