First severe heatwave warning issued for Chungcheong region in Cheongyang; perceived temperatures to exceed 38 C

Cheongyang, located in South Korea's Chungcheong region, has issued the area's first severe heatwave warning, as temperatures are expected to soar.

The Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration announced on July 5 that the heatwave warning in Cheongyang was upgraded to a severe heatwave warning at 11 a.m. This new warning category, introduced this year, is issued when the highest temperature is expected to exceed 39 degrees Celsius or the highest perceived temperature reaches 38 degrees Celsius.

Forecasters anticipate the perceived temperature in Cheongyang to reach 38 degrees Celsius or higher on this day. The administration urged residents in Cheongyang to immediately suspend all outdoor activities and outdoor work, except for essential tasks. They also advised people to rest in cool environments such as shaded areas, heat shelters, or air-conditioned facilities, and to drink plenty of water.

Meanwhile, Seocheon, previously under a heatwave advisory, has also been upgraded to a heatwave warning. Currently, all of the Chungnam region, except for the islands of Boryeong (under a heatwave advisory), is under a heatwave warning. High-temperature easterly winds continue to flow into the Chungnam region, combined with strong sunlight, leading to high temperatures across the area.
