First Student Enrolls for New Academic Year at KULAK in Kortrijk

Emma Duyck, an 18-year-old from Beveren-Leie (Waregem), has made history by becoming the first student to register for the upcoming academic year at the KULAK campus in Kortrijk. She is set to begin her studies in Biomedical Sciences this September.

Duyck, accompanied by her parents, shared her excitement about the special recognition she received as the inaugural student. "It feels special to be the very first. I'm even being honored here. I'm getting much more attention than I expected," she said with a laugh. She eagerly anticipates starting her degree program, stating, "I can't wait to start the Biomedical Sciences program. It interests me enormously, and I'll be able to do a lot with it later."

As the first new student, Emma received a welcome gift bag containing items like a water bottle, mug, T-shirt, and pen. She was also welcomed personally by the vice-rector, Evelyne Terryn, and posed for a photo with her. Duyck chose the KULAK campus not only for its proximity but also for its appealing atmosphere, which she experienced during an open day.

The KULAK campus, part of KU Leuven, is celebrating its 61st year. It began its first academic year in 1965-1966 with 175 students pursuing their bachelor's degrees in West Flanders. The name 'KULAK,' an acronym for Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Afdeling Kortrijk, was coined by the students themselves.
