FIS initiative seeks to increase the number of world skiing championships

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation wants to hold more world championships, including in even-numbered years when no Olympic Games are scheduled.

The FIS council approved the initiative at a council meeting, according to a statement published on the federation’s website. The concept would move beyond the current pattern of holding championships every two years in odd-numbered years.

Under the proposal, additional championships would take place in non-Olympic even-numbered years, beginning in 2032. FIS said the frequency could potentially increase as early as 2028.

The federation said its preliminary assessment considered sporting value, the international calendar, commercial potential and the ability to secure media rights.

Having reviewed the preliminary feasibility study, based on sporting value, calendar assessment and commercial potential, as well as the ability to implement media rights, the FIS council agreed on the concept of increasing the frequency of world championships.
