Fisherman's Gear Left on Rock Sparks Overnight Search in Jeju

A misplaced fishing rod and tackle bag on a rock near Jeju Island led to an extensive overnight search by the South Korean Coast Guard and fire services. The alarm was raised when the abandoned gear was spotted, prompting fears of a fall or drowning.

A 500-ton patrol vessel, along with police and fire personnel, scoured the area by sea and land. Drones were also deployed to aid the search effort. The operation continued through the night, with authorities concerned about the possibility of a maritime accident.

When fishing equipment is left on a rock, we have no choice but to immediately launch a search, judging it to be an emergency situation such as a fall or falling into the sea.

However, the situation was resolved peacefully when the 60-year-old fisherman was located at his accommodation the following morning. He explained that he had left his equipment on the rock, intending to retrieve it later, as carrying it back was too cumbersome. The Coast Guard confirmed no injuries or fatalities occurred and called for better communication from anglers to prevent such unnecessary deployments of resources.
