Five arrested in connection with fatal assault and robbery of elderly woman in Bangladesh

Authorities have arrested five people in connection with the brutal assault and robbery of an 80-year-old woman at Methikanda Railway Station in Narsingdi, Bangladesh. The victim, Bobi Begum, was attacked in her room on July 5, 2026, by assailants who demanded money she had saved.

According to police and local sources, the attackers allegedly beat Begum mercilessly when she refused to hand over cash, fleeing with approximately 40,000 Bangladeshi Taka. Local residents rescued the critically injured woman and admitted her to a local health complex. Her condition worsened, and she died on July 8, 2026, while being transferred to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital.

The arrests were made during overnight raids conducted by a joint team of the Detective Branch of police, Railway Police, and the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Narsingdi and Brahmanbaria. Rab-11's Narsingdi Camp Company Commander, Additional Superintendent of Police Ariful Islam, stated that details of the operation would be disclosed at a press briefing in Dhaka this afternoon.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the community, with residents demanding swift justice and exemplary punishment for those responsible. The assault also gained significant attention on social media, prompting local authorities and organizations to offer support for the victim's family. A case was filed with the Raipura Police Station on the night of July 6, 2026.
