Five-Car Collision Shuts Down Northbound Hsuehshan Tunnel During Holiday Travel Peak

A multi-vehicle accident involving five cars has completely blocked the northbound lanes of Taiwan's Hsuehshan Tunnel, causing significant travel disruptions. The collision occurred around 6 p.m. on June 21, during the peak travel period on the final day of the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.

The tunnel experienced extreme congestion, described as "purple-burst" status, indicating severe traffic jams. Four individuals sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital, reportedly with minor wounds. The incident has caused immense frustration for motorists heading north, with many expressing despair online about the extensive delays.

Dashcam footage revealed a white SUV at the center of the crash, its rear severely damaged. The vehicle appeared to lose control, blocking multiple lanes and leading to the chain-reaction collision. Debris was scattered across the roadway, creating a hazardous scene. Emergency services, including ambulances from Yilan and New Taipei fire departments, responded to the incident.

To mitigate the gridlock, drivers heading north from Yilan have been advised to detour via Provincial Highway 9 (the Beiyi Highway) or Provincial Highway 2 (the coastal highway). Social media users lamented the inevitable long delays, with comments ranging from "It's over, it's going to be jammed until midnight" to "The road home is so far away."
