Five dead after Amazon cargo plane crashes at Miami airport

Five people died after an Amazon cargo plane ran beyond the end of a runway at Miami International Airport, struck several vehicles and caught fire. Five others were injured, including three who were in critical condition, according to local fire chief Ray Jadallah.

The crash happened at about 2 p.m. local time, the Federal Aviation Administration said. More than 60 emergency vehicles responded to the fire. Images from the scene showed the 32-year-old Boeing 767 lying on its fuselage and appearing largely intact despite the flames.

The aircraft had departed from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Amazon operates its own cargo airline to move packages over long distances, but the flight was conducted by a partner airline. It remained unclear whether the plane was carrying cargo.

The airport initially closed all runways and taxiways, causing major disruption. Flight-tracking service FlightAware reported about 250 delays on Sunday afternoon. The FAA warned that restrictions could continue even after airport operations restart, with takeoffs and landings initially limited.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said the FAA would send investigators to the scene. The NTSB said it was collecting information. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said, "We are working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened."
