Five dead in Ohio mass drowning after failed rescue attempt of struggling swimmer

A tragic incident unfolded on the Scioto River in Ohio, resulting in the deaths of five individuals after a series of failed rescue attempts. The tragedy occurred Sunday night at the O'Shaughnessy Reservoir, near Columbus.

According to the Delaware County Sheriff's Office, a group of at least seven people, including two sets of parents, a friend, and two children, were near the riverbank. One adult entered the water to swim and began to struggle. Two other adults attempted to help but also began to flounder. Subsequently, two more adults entered the water in an attempt to rescue them, leading to all five disappearing beneath the surface.

Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer explained that such situations are not uncommon, where individuals attempt rescues without the necessary skills, resulting in multiple fatalities. Emergency services were alerted when one of the two children present ran to a nearby road and flagged down a motorist, reporting that their family was in the river. Responders quickly recovered two women from the water, who were pronounced dead at a local hospital. The bodies of the three missing men were recovered the following day. The two children, both under 10 years old, have been placed in the care of the local family services agency.
