Five drown in Ohio river after rescue attempt; child sought help

Tragedy struck a river in Ohio when five individuals lost their lives after entering the water to help someone who was struggling to swim. The group had gathered on Sunday along the Scioto River in Powell, a Columbus suburb, when the incident began.

Authorities were alerted when a motorist spotted a distressed child running on a nearby road. Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer stated at a news conference that the child was with the group. Two children under the age of 10 have been placed in the care of family services, including the child who sought help.

Rescue crews found two women in the water on Sunday, who were later pronounced dead at a hospital. The bodies of three men were recovered from the river on Monday, according to Tracy Whited, a spokesperson for the Delaware County Sheriff's Department.

This incident follows another tragedy just two days prior, where five members of a family perished in southern Utah due to a flash flood that swept through canyons during a hiking trip.
