Five Journalists Reported Missing While Covering Anak Krakatau Eruption

Five journalists and two boat crew members lost contact while traveling to cover the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait.

Basarnas Banten sent a search-and-rescue team to search the area. The group had left from the Banten waters on Monday afternoon, September 7, according to Basarnas Banten chief Al Amrad.

On Monday, September 7, 2026, at 2 p.m. local time, Banten journalists departed from Pagedongan Carita pier to cover Mount Anak Krakatau’s activity.

One journalist briefly communicated with a colleague in Lampung before contact was lost. The journalist shared the vessel’s location at 2:42 p.m. At 3:04 p.m., communication ended, Amrad said. The group had not been found when the report was published.

Basarnas updated the number of people aboard the vessel on Tuesday evening, saying the group consisted of five journalists and two crew members. Joint teams continued sweeping the area.

The last communication with the victim was with a Lampung journalist named Abay, who received the final shared location at 2:42 p.m. on September 7, and at 3:04 p.m. contact was lost. As of this report, the victims have not been found.
