Five killed after Amazon cargo plane crashes into vehicles at Miami airport

An Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway after landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, struck several vehicles and caught fire. At least five people died and five others were injured, officials said.

Miami-Dade County Fire Chief Ray Jadallah said three injured people were taken to trauma centers in critical condition, while two others received treatment at a local hospital. He said the aircraft struck vehicles and trapped victims inside them. A technical rescue team carried out a complex extrication and searched for the pilot and co-pilot, who were trapped in the plane. Jadallah did not say whether either survived.

The airplane did strike a couple of vehicles, which left a couple of victims that were actually trapped in the vehicles.

Video showed thick smoke rising from the blue-and-white Boeing 767 after it arrived at 1:58 p.m. from Puerto Rico. The aircraft operated as Prime Air Flight 7598. Fire officials said the crash caused a fire, and crews later used foam to extinguish flames in the engine compartment.

A complex extrication with our technical rescue team was needed, including a search and rescue of the pilot and co-pilot that were trapped in this aircraft.

About 60 fire apparatus and nearly 200 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded. One person trapped beneath a vehicle required specialized rescue, while hazardous-materials teams shut down the aircraft’s engine and worked to control a fuel leak.

The National Transportation Safety Board said the B-767-300 was flying from San Juan and that it had sent a team to investigate the runway excursion. The cause will be determined by the Federal Aviation Administration and the NTSB. Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company would cooperate with the investigation and expressed sympathy to those affected.

Miami Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz described the scene as “really tragic” but said there was no apparent threat to public safety. The airport closed all runways and taxiways, and travelers were advised to check with their airlines amid delays and cancellations.
