Five killed in Amazon cargo plane crash in Miami

At least five people were killed when an Amazon cargo plane overshot a runway at Miami International Airport, caught fire and struck several vehicles. Five others were taken to hospital, officials and police said at a news conference.

The crash occurred on Sunday afternoon local time. Authorities initially did not say whether the dead or injured included members of the aircraft’s crew or people on the ground. One person was reportedly trapped beneath a vehicle, but officials provided no further details about the casualties.

The Federal Aviation Administration said on X that the aircraft, a Boeing 767-300, ran beyond the runway after landing. It had flown from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Miami airport temporarily halted air traffic after the accident. It later said one runway had reopened, while advising passengers to check with their airlines. The airport serves one of the United States’ major tourist destinations and is among the country’s major transport hubs. Many Americans were travelling over the holiday weekend.

The aircraft operated on behalf of Amazon through a partner airline. An Amazon spokesperson said on X that an incident occurred during the landing attempt and that the company was working closely with authorities to determine what happened. “We are deeply shaken that five people lost their lives,” the spokesperson said. Amazon operates its own cargo airline to move packages over long distances, but it remained unclear whether the plane was carrying cargo.
